honour killing....

An honour killing..this is the incidence you must have heard if you listen news or from any source of getting news You must be knowing that what is it and if not I’ll try to make you all much clear from my point of view..and if someone of you want to convey his/her point of view then he/she is welcome..So without being diverted from the topic let me come back to my topic…
An honor killing or honour killing (also called a customary killing) is the murder of a member of a family or social group by other members, due to the belief of the perpetrators (and potentially the wider community) that the victim has brought upon the family or community.
Recentle many cases have been arised relating to this issue i.e. honour killing..few days ago everyday one new case was being telecaste on news channel and there are many big issues occurred which created anxiety in people belonging to the region where such issues are happening daily..Honour killings have been reported in northern regions of India, mainly in the Indian states of , Rajasthan, Haryana and Bihar, as a result of people marrying without their family's acceptance, and sometimes for marrying outside their caste or religion. As the main shameful thing is such kind of crimes are being done by the people who were the superiors among all the caste..As among Rajputs, marriages with members of other castes can provoke the killing of the married couple and immediate family members. This form of honour killing is attributed to Rajput culture and traditional views on the perceived "purity" of a lineage.
If we talk about this issue after relating todata then the Indian state of Punjab also is notorious for honour killings. According to data compiled by the Punjab Police, 34 honour killings were reported in the state between 2008 and 2010: 10 in 2008, 20 in 2009, and four in 2010 .As this record is as per the police record but I don’t think that each and every case is filed in police register or police come to know about every case..
Haryana also is known for incidents of honour killing in the northern Indian state of Bihar has also been notorious for honour killings. Recent cases include a 16-year-old girl, Imrana, from Bhojpur who was set on fire inside her house in a case of what the police called ‘moral vigilantism’. The victim had screamed for help for about 20 minutes before neighbours arrived, only to find her still smoldering. She was admitted to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. In May 2008, Jayvirsingh Bhadodiya shot his daughter Vandana Bhadodiya and struck her on the head with an axe.In June 2010 some incidents were reported even from Delhi.
In a landmark judgment in March 2010, Karnal district court ordered the execution of the five perpetrators of an honour killing and imprisoning for life the khap (local caste-based council) head who ordered the killings of Manoj Banwala (23) and Babli (19), a man and woman of the same clan who eloped and married in June 2007. Despite having been given police protection on court orders, they were kidnapped; their mutilated bodies were found a week later in an irrigation canal.
Now before I tellyou some more cases let me tell youwhat is this ‘khap panchayat’.. Khap panchayat governs the khap formed by same gotra (clan) families from several neighbouring villages.Khap panchayats are prevalent in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and Parts of Rajasthan. Love marriages are considered taboo in areas governed by Khap panchayats. Those living in a Khap are not allowed to marry in the same gotra or even in any gotra from the same village. Many young couples have been killed in the past defying khap rules.
Khap panchayat imposes its writ through social boycotts and fines and in most cases end up either killing or forcing the victims to commit suicide. All this is done in the name of brotherhood and its honour. It is due to the inherent weakness of democratically elected Panchayati Raj institutions, Khap panchayats have been powerful. Even the government has not done much to control their power.
The 10-15 men who constitute a Khap settle disputes and control the lives of young people. Many village people also defend these caste panchayats as they deliver the verdict in one sitting whereas court cases drag for years. According to them, in many cases innocent people get harassed in the court and by police. Here as everyone is known so they cross check everything to ensure neutrality. In some Haryana villages, the young girls are routinely threatened, abused and killed all under Khap verdicts. It is acceptable for the families to feed pesticide pills to the teenage girls and then dispose off their bodies by burning them without any police records. The entire onus of siblinghood rests on the girl. She is the keeper of village honor. Sometimes rules are bending for the boys but a girl is never allowed to bend the rules. If a couple run away then the families risk the boycott and hefty fines in lakhs of rupees. Even the other women of the house can suffer abuse.
In keeping with the khap rules, older villages try to keep the young people apart. Some schools are also forced to have separate timings for the boys and girls. Fearing their daughters would go astray, many parents marry them off at an early age. People have unquestionable faith in the justice of khap. The question of rights for women does not exist any where in the territories ruled by Khap panchayats.
Now my question to all is where the judiciary power i/.e.,wether Supreme Court or high court takes so many years to give verdict how can a group of people give a verdict in jes one gathering. This not all, there are many more cases like these which are mentioned above. Even one of the politician family was arrested in relation to this matter for e.g.Nitish Katara was 24 year old Indian business executive in Delhi, who was murdered in the early hours of February 17, 2002, by Vikas Yadav the son of influential criminal-politician D. P. Yadav. Nitish had recently graduated from the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, where, he had fallen in love with his classmate, Bharti Yadav, sister of Vikas. The trial court held that Nitish's murder was an honour killing because the family did not approve their relationship. Vikas and Vishal Yadav were later found guilty by the trial Court and awarded life sentence on 30 May 2008.
In contrast, honour killings are rare to non-existent in SouthIndia and the western. Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. There have been no honor killings in West Bengal in over 100 years, largely due to the activism and influence of reformists such as Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Vidyasagar and Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
If one state can show such a good stats regarding this issue than why not the other states..why is there need of honour killing..we always talk about devolping India..and after that such kind of acts what does this prove..are we developing..is our mentality growing up…I think no one can answer..as until and unless we don’t grow our mentality higher,we don’t stop discrimination part from our mind till then we cant be developed or be in process of developing..
In 1990 the National Commission for Women set up a statutory body in order to address the issues of honor killings among some ethnic groups in North India. This body reviewed constitutional, legal and other provisions as well as challenges women face. The NCW's activism has contributed significantly towards the reduction of honor killings in rural areas of North India.According to Pakistani activists Hina Jilani and Eman M. Ahmed, Indian women are considerably better protected against honor killings by Indian law and government than Pakistani women, and they have suggested that governments of countries affected by honor killings use Indian law as a model in order to prevent honor killings in their respective societies.
In June 2010, scrutinizing the increasing number of honour killings, the Supreme Court of India issued notices to the Central Government and six states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan to take preventive measures against the social evil.
Alarmed by the rise of honour killings, the Government planned to bring a bill in the Monsoon Session of Parliament July 2010 to provide for deterrent punishment for 'honour' killings ..
Government is taking measures but nothing can be done unti and unless we don’t take steps in getting free from this problem as if it will be continued like this it will be creating a major problem for all..so every indian has to consider this problem seriously otherwise it would be too late
“Jaago India Jaago..Warna Bahut Der Ho Jayegi”..
